A Study on the Unorganized Workforce in India and Common Problems faced by Them
Abstract
There were many initiatives taken by the Government after independence to eradicate labour problems in India. The Government has created many rules and laws to prevent labourers from any kind of mishap, but we see that there is no proper upliftment of the unorganized workers in the society. India is still a land of the world’s biggest unorganized labour force. Approx 90 percent of workers come under unorganized sector in India including agricultural labours. Most of these unorganized labour workers are contract labour. There are hundreds of government initiatives but policy paralysis has left the lot of the unorganized labours in a poor state. There are certain loopholes in the Indian legal framework, due to which workers are suffering from common problems like low wages, low social security, job security, economic backwardness etc. Most of the Indian labourers are illiterate or belong to backward places and they are not aware of their rights and powers, and due to insecure jobs they are not able to raise their voices. Also political influence in Unions makes the workers weaker. It is the common task of society, Government, different NGO’s, public and private players to come together and solve the labour problems in the unorganized sector in India.
