BIBLIOMETRIC INSIGHTS INTO RESEARCH ON SMEs’ ACCESS TO FINANCE
Abstract
Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are crucial contributors to economic progress, job creation, innovation, and poverty alleviation in both developed and emerging economies. However, these enterprises frequently experience difficulties in obtaining formal financial support due to issues such as lack of collateral, information gaps, low financial awareness, and institutional constraints. This study conducts a bibliometric review of global research on SME access to finance in order to examine publication patterns, key contributors, prominent journals, major themes, and future research trends.
The analysis is based on scholarly works indexed in databases such as Scopus and Web of Science. Various bibliometric techniques, including citation analysis, co-authorship mapping, keyword co-occurrence, and thematic evaluation, are used to understand the intellectual framework of this research area.
The results indicate a noticeable increase in research activity after 2015, especially in emerging areas such as financial technology (FinTech), digital finance, financial inclusion, crowdfunding, and sustainable finance. The findings also reveal that developing countries dominate this research domain due to more severe financing challenges faced by SMEs. The paper contributes by providing a comprehensive overview of the evolution of SME financing research and identifying future opportunities in areas such as digital lending, green finance, and inclusive financial systems.
