The Rapid Emergence of Insurtech in India: A Comprehensive Study of Digital Transformation, Market Trends, and Future Prospects
Abstract
InsurTech, the integration of digital technologies into insurance products, distribution, underwriting, and claims management, is transforming the Indian insurance industry. This paper presents a systematic review of academic literature and industry reports to examine the growth, key drivers, emerging trends, challenges, and future prospects of the InsurTech ecosystem in India. The review identifies technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, big data analytics, blockchain, cloud computing, and the Internet of Things (IoT) as major enablers of operational efficiency, improved customer experience, and enhanced risk assessment. It also highlights the role of regulatory support, digital payment infrastructure, increasing smartphone penetration, and rising consumer awareness in accelerating adoption. Despite significant progress, challenges including data privacy, cybersecurity risks, low insurance penetration in rural areas, digital literacy gaps, and legacy system integration persist. The review identifies important research gaps and provides insights for researchers, policymakers, insurers, and technology firms to strengthen innovation, financial inclusion, and the sustainable growth of India’s digital insurance ecosystem.
